Ayurveda proclaims that there is nothing in the universe that is non-medicinal. Though numerous medicinal plants are found to exist in the world. only a few among them have been identified, classified and described with their properties and uses. Different ways of classification of plants are seen in Veda and Ayurveda based on the lines of their origin. properties and actions for the purpose of identification and utilization. Charaka classified drugs in 50 groups. each containing 10 drugs and named it as Dashemani, whereas Sushruta named plant under the heading Gana. Hence an attempt has been made to show different systems of drug classification in Brihatrayi and their rationality in therapeutics.
